Search Engine Problems

Laykin.Com uses "WebPosition" to as one of the tools for keeping your site up to date and on the top 10 of as many search engines as possible.

Here are a few problems we've noticed with some of the big search engines which we are on the look out for:

1) Lycos URL search sometimes says a page was not found in their index when it fact it was in there. This is a bug with Lycos's URL search function and NOT with WebPosition. E-mail Lycos about it and perhaps they'll fix the bug after enough complaints.

2) Some URL search routines are not 100% accurate such as with Excite. It's possible that your page could be indexed but not show up in the first 30 or first XX number of matches. If it does show up in the search, WebPosition will find it. Excite has informed us they are working on improving their URL search capability.

3) Yellow page URL searches work only for your domain name. Searches for specific pages within your domain will fail. This is a limitation of Yellow Pages and not WebPosition. E-mail Yellow Pages about it and perhaps they'll fix the bug after enough complaints.

4) AltaVista sometimes varies search positions on identical searches conducted within minutes of each other. This is a behavior of the engine but is pretty rare. Positions generally don't vary much.

5) HotBot will not do URL searches accurately at all. WebPosition now skips URL and domain searches for this engine until they add accurate support for these kind of searches. Keyword and phrase searches work fine.

6) WebCrawler sometimes reports that a URL does not exist in the index when it actually does. This appears to be caused from their URL look up server becoming overloaded periodically. If you click the "Actual Search Results" link on the report, WebCrawler will indicate this as a possibility. Therefore, if your page seems to get "dropped" one day on this engine, don't jump to any conclusions right away.

7) It's becoming apparent that the search engines have bugs too and sometimes do not work properly or reliably 100% of the time. For example, we've seen searches fail or give bad results in the morning, then that afternoon, they worked fine. This was for both searches done manually and from WebPosition. Some engines fail for a few hours, then start working again later. If you experience any problems, do the search by hand on the engine to see if its a glitch with the engine or a problem with WebPosition.

We'll continue to issue updates as needed to maintain reliability and accuracy with all the search engines. The above is provided for your information. However, we've found that despite intermittent problems with an engine or two, that searches generally complete and are accurate 99% or more of the time.

An alternative technique to verify whether a particular page/URL is present in a search engine index is to do a keyword/phrase search for a phrase that is likely only to exist on your page. If WebPosition finds that phrase, then you know that your page was indexed.
