A Century on Fifth Street
Los Angeles in the 1920s was a city in the act of becoming itself — and Fifth Street was at its heart. It was here that the Laykin Diamond Company first opened its doors, at 219 West Fifth Street, in the years when downtown Los Angeles was the commercial and social center of the western United States.
The firm moved further west along Fifth, then to the grand Alexandria Hotel at Fifth and Spring — once the finest address in Los Angeles, host to presidents and film stars alike.
In the 1930s, the firm moved west to the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, changed its name to Laykin et Cie, and began the expansion that would define it: boutiques in the great Southern California resorts, eventually finding its natural home within the storied salons of I. Magnin & Company.
A century later, Laykin et Cie remains on Fifth Street — high above downtown Los Angeles in the US Bank Tower, still looking west across the city it has served since the beginning.
